Hypothyroidism clinical trials at UCSF

2 research studies open to eligible people

Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid does not make enough hormone. UCSF is running a long-term study collecting medical history from people with a rare enzyme disorder. UCSF is testing an intervention to reduce thyroid medicines in older adults.

  • Optimizing Care for Older Adults Through Thyroid Hormone Deprescribing

open to eligible people ages 65 years and up

The proposed study focuses on testing a novel adapted evidence-based multilevel intervention, Deprescribing Thyroid Hormone In Older Adults (D-THIO), to support thyroid hormone deprescribing (dose de-escalation and/or discontinuation) in older adults with thyroid hormone overtreatment and/or misuse and reduce patient harm. Findings from this study will lay the groundwork for broad implementation of D-THIO and serve as a model for deprescribing inappropriate medications for other endocrine conditions and conditions with biochemical monitoring.

  • Sphingosine Phosphate Lyase Insufficiency Syndrome (SPLIS)

    open to all eligible people

This is a prospective longitudinal natural history study with a retrospective cross-sectional arm aimed at determining the natural history of sphingosine phosphate lyase insufficiency syndrome (SPLIS), a recently recognized inborn error of metabolism. The central hypothesis is that age of onset, other disease features, and disease biomarkers will be predictive of quality of life (QOL) and survival in SPLIS patients.
