Stimulant use involves using drugs to increase energy and alertness. UCSF is conducting clinical trials for sexual minority men who use stimulants and take PrEP. The trials focus on finding effective treatments for better health outcomes.

  • PrEP Affect Regulation Treatment Innovation

    open to eligible males ages 18 years and up

    This multi-site randomized controlled trial enrolling sexual minority men who use stimulants and are currently taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). This randomized controlled trial will test the efficacy of a PrEP Affect Regulation Treatment Innovation (PARTI) condition comprised of a 5-session positive affect intervention delivered during smartphone-based Contingency Management (CM) for directly observed PrEP doses (PARTI+CM) compared to an attention-control condition delivered during CM. The primary outcome is HIV acquisition risk measured using a combination of tenofovir-diphosphate levels in dried blood spots that are indicative of sub-optimal adherence to PrEP and recent condomless anal sex.

  • Contingency Management in HIV Care for Both Stimulant Use & ART Adherence

    Methamphetamine use and associated sequelae have been rising, and represent a major barrier to successful control of the HIV epidemic. Methamphetamine use is associated with poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy for HIV, and we propose a trial of contingency management (providing incentives for behavioral change) targeting both reduced methamphetamine use and improved adherence to HIV medications. We will utilize a real-time, point-of-care urine assay for both outcomes, aiming to evaluate feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of HIV care-based contingency management. We will also study hair levels as a quantitative outcome for reduction in methamphetamine use.
